Basic Training (Available On Line)
LINKS

Start here with the BSA Fast Start for a background on troop organization and operation. This covers the basics, and all adults should take this, including former scouts, for an adult-focused orientation to scouting.
FAST START

The next step is the Youth Protection presentation. For your own protection as well as the protection of the scouts, all adults should see this video. It's a requirement for all troop leaders.
YOUTH PROTECTION

New Leader Essentials completes basic training for adult leaders. This 90 minute class highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the training session. Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once.

Assistant Scoutmaster Class
For adults that register as Assistant Scoutmasters or Scoutmasters, working closely with scouts in our meetings, trips, and other activities, BSA offers two class: Leader Specific Training and Outdoor Leader Skills. The Leader Specific Training for Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster is taught in 3 sessions of 3 hours each - the class can be taught in other formats, but to cover all of the material requires a total of 9 hours. Completing Basic Training and these classes earns you the "Trained" certification, and helps to qualify the troop annually as a Quality Unit.

Troop Committee Class (Available On Line)
Members of the Troop Committee should take the Troop Committee Challenge to learn the responsibilities of the Troop Committee. Completing Basic Training and this class earns you the "Trained" certification and helps to qualify the troop annually as a Quality Unit.
TROOP COMMITTEE CHALLENGE

Chartered Organization Representative
The troop's Chartered Organization Representative (COR) must complete Youth Protection, New Leader Essentials, and the Chartered Organization Representative Training in order to earn the "Trained" certification. The COR is also the organization's contact with the district committee and the local council. This training session will discuss the responsibilities of the COR including: an overview of the BSA, the charter concept, your job as a COR, and
when you need unit leadership.

Advanced Training: Wood Badge

The Wood Badge course began with Lord Baden-Powell as a series of lectures. Today the focus is on leadership skills. The first part of the new Wood Badge course reflects unit meetings, while the second part of the course uses a troop camping activity as its delivery model.

Wood Badge courses may be conducted as a weeklong experience, or over two weekends with patrol meetings between each session. Experience has shown that either format is satisfactory.

As a result of attending Wood Badge, participants will be able to

  • View Scouting globally, as a family of interrelated, values-based programs that provide age-appropriate activities for youth.
  • Recognize the contemporary leadership concepts utilized in corporate America and leading government organizations that are relevant to our values-based movement.
  • Apply the skills they learn from their participation as a member of a successful working team.
  • Revitalize their commitment by sharing in an overall inspirational experience that helps provide Scouting with the leadership it needs to accomplish its mission on an ongoing basis.

Scouters invited to participate in Wood Badge training must have completed the basic training courses for their Scout position and completed the outdoor skills training programs appropriate for their Scouting position.
